After the news from Beyoncé last week, could anything be better? This week saw pop culture news from Netflix, Shondaland and NPR music. The entertainment industry continued to prepare for the Oscars and celebrate music with pre-GRAMMY parties. We continued to fall in love with Melissa McCarty as Sean Spicer (on Saturday Night Live) and remembered the death of Whitney Houston – five years ago.
1…Netflix Announces the Premiere Date for Orange is the New Black Season 5
Netflix announced that Season 5 of Orange is the New Black (OITNB) will premiere on June 9. Danielle Brooks, on the Red Carpet at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, revealed that the new season would take place over three days. Read the details from the Hollywood Reporter >>> HERE.
Watch the 15-second teaser below.
I have to be honest. Season 4 of OITNB was a tough one for me. It was intense and challenging to watch at times. I’m still a fan of the show and look forward to the new season. However…I have a suspicion Season 5 will be another intense season. It will be great to see how things unfold with the cliffhanger from last season’s finale. Will you watch OITNB Season 5?
2…Trey Songz Gets a Reality Show
Trey Songz is looking for love in the new reality show, Tremaine the Playboy. Tremaine (Trey’s alter ego) is looking for the perfect match. The show includes a bevy of single women, rose ceremonies and “fun and games.” You can view the supertrailer from VH1 >>> HERE.
We can thank VH1 for this mess. I’m not sure of the motivation for Trey Songz to do this show. I’m positive he can find love…anywhere. My hope and prayer is that this is not “Flavor of Love” 2.0 – remember that show. I try to forget it. I have mixed feelings about these VH1 bachelor dating shows. We know that ABC is not casting black males for bachelors on their hit show. However, these ratchet VH1 shows don’t provide motivation for ABC to look at men of color. A few years ago there was a slight uproar for ABC to show a more multicultural cast on the Bachelor and Bachelorette. They have since only added a sprinkling of multicultural people to the “suitors” not the main bachelor or bachelorette. This could be the reason that VH1 is reviving this reality dating format for their channel. Let’s hope they are doing this in the right spirit. I am leaning toward the fact that they are mostly looking for ratings and ratchetness, not to fill a multicultural reality dating void.
Why, Trey Songz? This is my question. Like, “why would you do this, Trey?”
3…’Dear White People’ Netflix release date set for this spring
The half-hour comedy series is based on the indie feature by Justin Simien. The show highlights a “diverse group of students of color as they navigate a predominantly white Ivy League college where racial tensions are often swept under the rug,” as explained by Deadline. Dear White People premieres April 28.

I was intrigued when the indie film of the same name premiered in 2014. But, I realized that I never actually watched the movie. I’m changing that. I plan to watch it before the series premiere. In looking at the trailer, it gives me a slight vibe of “Higher Learning.” Remember that movie? Good to hear that the Netflix project will be a comedy. Laughter does the body good.
Some people are already cancelling their Netflix subscription because of this series. They say the series promotes “white genocide.” Those who are boycotting Netflix are using the hashtag #NoNetflix to promote the boycott. #SMDH ?
Watch the teaser below.
4…Luvvie Ajayi is coming to Shondaland
Shonda Rhimes is developing a series based on the best-selling book, I’m Judging You: The Do-Better Manual, by Luvvie Ajayi. The show will be a scripted comedy developed for ABC Studios. Read more on the Luvvie deal >>> HERE.
I’m still reading Luvvie’s book, I’m Judging You. But, I am here ?? for ?? this ??. I’ve been a fan of Luvvie for a while now. I actually brushed shoulders with her at the 2015 Bentonville Film Festival, but had a “fandemonium” moment and didn’t introduce myself. I know. I’m pitiful. Luvvie, if you’re reading this, we made eye contact in Bentonville last year. I hope our paths cross again soon.
Let’s be clear, Shonda Rhimes will do so much justice to “I’m Judging You” and Luvvie Ajayi. The series will be wonderful. I can’t wait!
5…Prince’s Warner Bros. catalog will be available to stream
As of today, Prince’s catalog of songs for Warner Bros. will available for streaming outside of Tidal music service. Get the details from NPR >>> HERE.
This is wonderful news. Prince was legendarily private with streaming his music. He made sure his songs were not out [in the world] without authorization. This was clear when people were trying to find his music to stream after his death. I only found one streaming app – iHeartRadio – that created a station of his music. I looked on Spotify and other services. His music, at the time, was only available through Tidal. I’m excited to create my Prince Spotify playlist, are you?!
In closing, there were several big headlines this week in the pop culture world. Two new series were announced along with two premiere dates for Netflix originals. A new book hit the shelves “spilling the tea” from Atlanta…in fiction, of course. The GRAMMYs
are tonight. There will be several things to note from the show. Check back next week for more pop culture news items.
