Academy Awards: Will You Watch?

It’s Oscars Weekend in the United States. People are buzzing around Los Angeles preparing for the Academy Awards, film industry’s biggest night. A-list actors are attending parties and working with stylists to choose the perfect red-carpet outfit. The world will be watching Sunday, February 22 on ABC as the Oscar winners are announced. Neil Patrick Harris is the host. I’m excited to see his opening monologue and antics. Will he be able to top Ellen’s epic hosting performance last year?

Fashion is always a hot topic during award season. Who will be the best-dressed, and conversely, who will be the one who with the worst outfit. What will the fashion trends be for the Academy Awards this year? Earlier this season there were a few trends to emerge – the color red was a big trend at the Golden Globes in January and purple was the color of the night at the Screen Actors Guild Awards earlier this year.

The biggest award of night each year is the Best Motion Picture Academy Award. This year there are eight nominees:

Oscar Watch Parties

In past years, several of my friends have hosted an Academy Awards Watch Party. The group would get together and cheer on our favorite actors and movies while indulging in snacks and…libations. Watch parties are always a fun time. There’s a healthy dose of competition and camaraderie. Tomorrow night, I will most likely watch the telecast alone or with family. However, if I were to host a watch party, below are five recipes for food that I would serve.

  1. Cheese Sticks for Oscars Night / Alexandra’s Kitchen
  2. Flavored Popcorn / Martha Stewart
  3. Ham and Swiss Sliders / Chef in Training
  4. Champagne Red Velvet Cupcakes / Atta Girl Says
  5. Sparkling Celebration Punch / Divas Can Cook

Oh those recipes sound so yummy! I have always enjoyed the Oscars and even had an Oscar party last year but this year I was so disappointed in the lack of diversity I only watched the end.

Nadeen, I was disappointed too in the lack of diversity. However, as a TV/Film industry junkie, I was watched most of the show. They had several presenters of color (who were past winners and or nominees). I hope the outcry this year will help make things better in years to come.

Let me know if you try any of the recipes! Thanks for the comment.
