Pop Culture Headlines – February 5, 2017

1…Oprah Joins “60 Minutes”>>>

Hollywood Reporter

This fall, Oprah Winfrey joins “60 Minutes” as a special contributor. Read more about this addition on Hollywood Reporter >>> HERE.

First of all, this is a good move for Oprah. She can do no wrong. I’m like Benita Burrell from “In Living Color” when she would proclaim, “don’t say nothing bad about Miss Jenkins!” I feel the same way about Mother Oprah. Whatever she does is good with me! Furthermore, I like this new opportunity as it will give her additional time on television – and she will be back on  a broadcast network. I love OWN – Oprah Winfrey Network (a cable network), but the masses have missed her on the broadcast channels.

Carry on, Sister Winfrey! I am here for you and this special contributor situation.

2…Beyoncé Announcement>>>

Instagram | @Beyonce

Beyoncé and Jay-Z are expecting…TWINS! She announced to the world with a photo shoot posted to her Instagram account. See her announcement below. As a result, this image broke the record [previously held by Selena Gomez] for the most “likes” in Instagram history.

The world needed this news. I’m being serious. With everything that’s happening with President 45 and his signature-happy little hands, we needed a distraction; and Beyoncé’s floral-inspired pregnancy photos gave us this and more. Of course, the world reacted and there were mixed emotions on #BlackTwitter. It seems like most people were happy and positive. However, there were a few trolls [on Twitter] “going in” on the photo and mentioning JCPenney as the inspiration. Truth be told, I understand the JCP comparison. The photo did give a JCP Portrait Studio vibe; but JCPenney was not having it! They clapped back ?? so quick and tough. It was almost unbelievable. I thought their account had been hacked; but no, the social media team was responsible for the tweets. And, we all loved them for their personality and spunk. Bravo!

Quiet as it’s kept, Bey said “you not gon’ debate whether or not I’m pregnant this time. Here are the photos. I got receipts, snitches.” Almost everyone wondered for years if Beyoncé was really pregnant with Blue Ivy.

3…’Boondocks’ creator Aaron McGruder is developing a new series>>>

‘Boondocks’ creator Aaron McGruder is creating a new series with well-known producer Will Packer for Amazon. The exact details about the series are being keep quiet. The plot hasn’t been confirmed, and we don’t know if it will be live-action or animated. Read more on AfroPunk >>> HERE.
“Now, I’d like to begin today by apologizing on behalf of YOU to ME…for how you’ve treated me these last two weeks. And, that apology is NOT ACCEPTED!” ~Melissa McCarthy as Sean Spicer

4…Melissa McCarthy is a comedic genius.>>>

Melissa McCarthy was a surprise guest on Saturday Night Live when she showed up to portray White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer. Click the image below to watch the full skit.

First, SNL adds Alec Baldwin (as President 45) and now this. I was not ready for the hilarity! Melissa McCarthy was superb as Sean Spicer. Her skit was funny, based on the truth and overall AH-MAZING! I laughed so hard that I cried. ?? I can see this role being a recurring part of SNL. Sean Spicer is fodder for comedy and Melissa McCarthy will continue to shine. SNL, please keep this going. We (the world) needs this comedy to lighten the mood in the atmosphere for the next four years. Thank you.

5…Super Bowl LI was one of the greatest games in Super Bowl History>>>

Super Bowl LI just ended with one of the greatest comeback stories of any sports championship. The game went into overtime where the New England Patriots scored a touchdown to win the game. Read more about this exciting game on CNN >>> HERE.

Were you supporting the Falcons for the Patriots? I was rooting for the Atlanta Falcons and dancing around the living room during the first half. The Falcons came to play! Ya heard?! At halftime, Atlanta was leading 28-3 and the people in downtown ATL were preparing for the after parties and figuring out their celebratory dance moves (this is what I told myself). But, HOLD UP {? They don’t love you like I love you}. The second half arrived and the Falcons left the building! At the end of the game, we were left to wonder: how do you squander a 25-point lead? The internet went wild. My favorite GIF that circulated that night is below.

In conclusion, this week has been a bit tough personally, but thanks to the pop culture headlines I found my comedy relief. I was elated when I heard about Oprah’s new gig, smiled in excitement for Beyoncé and her twins and laughed out loud at Melissa McCarthy. But, the Falcons let me down. It’s okay, baseball spring training season starts soon!

SNL has been on a roll lately. I am here for it, too! Before Bey released her news, I read on a site that she was expecting, but I didn’t believe it. Congrats to her. I love hearing when people struggling with fertility become prego.

Yes this was a week for headlines that’s for sure. I missed the announcement about Oprah with all of the news of the others. I think the shock of them all for me is definitely the loss of the SuperBowl for the Falcons. I think many of us expected a different outcome after the first 3 quarters.

I love your wrap-ups! I’m still salty about the Tamron Hall shade. They actually thought she was going to take that? Melissa McCarthy deserves an Emmy award for her portrayal of the press secretary! I laughed til I cried.
