Pop Culture Items: 5 Stories You May Have Missed

Ramona Pop Culture 19 Comments

This weekend the United States celebrates Mother’s Day. Children everywhere will lavish their moms with cards and gifts and lots of love. While the nation prepares, pop culture items continued to make the news cycles. This week’s items include a live musical announcement, the possible end of a series, an internet meme and a season premier date and more.

Pop Culture Items

1…Bow Wow stunting sparks the #BowWowChallenge on social media
Bow Wow started a social media frenzy when he posted on Instagram last week showcasing his lavish lifestyle and private jet transportation…only to have that image refuted by a passenger who snapped a photo of him on a commercial flight. #Busted! This sparked #BowWowChallenge where social media users post embellished lifestyle photos and include an image of reality using the hashtag #BowWowChallenge. Read more about the challenge from The Verge >>> HERE.

There’s nothing like a good internet meme, and this #BowWowChallenge has me laughing out loud. Bow Wow did respond to the situation on The Morning Show on 105.1, explaining that the post [and frontin’] were for his upcoming show on WE TV, Growing Up Hip Hop. Hmmmm….yea right. I guess we will see if he’s telling the truth. However, it does seem shady to me. I believe he was “faking the funk” about private jet travel and got caught by an observant airline passenger with a  Twitter account. Check the hashtag for laughs on laughs on laughs.

2…Season 3 of The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt starts next week

Netflix
Season 3 of The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt starts on May 19. The new season picks up where Season 2 ended and offers more twists and turns and hilarious moments. Check out the trailer video below or visit the official Netflix site >>> HERE.

I’m a fan of Kimmy Schmidt. I’ve watched each season and loved it. I can’t wait for Season 3 to premiere. I’m sure Kimmy and Titus will keep us entertained. I’m ready to see what’s next for Kimmy and her pals. Will you watch the new season?

3…Scandal will reportedly end after next season, its 7th

The hit show may end after next season. Shonda Rhimes, the show’s creator, has long indicated that she knows how the show will end and when that time will come. Rhimes and/or ABC have yet to confirm the show’s finale date. Read more from Cosmopolitan >>> HERE.

Hold on to your hats, Gladiators. Be ye forewarned. Scandal is ending and the end may be sooner than you think. Truth be told, I’ve fallen off the Scandal wagon. I was an avid viewer when it first started and loved Olivia Pope and OPA. I waited each week to see the new episodes and Olivia’s outfits. Things got confusing for me in Season 4, and I’ve been a fair-weather fan since then. I will be sad to see the show go, but I understand. Shonda Rhimes is the show creator and makes the calls.

4…”Rent” announced as Fox’s next live musical

Fox announced this week that Jonathon Larson’s Rent will be the next live musical for the network. The cast has yet to be announced. This live performance will be the follow up to the popular Grease Live from last fall. Rent, set in New York City’s East Village, celebrates its 20th Anniversary this year. Read more about the announcement from ET Online >>> HERE.

I am HERE for this. I can’t wait to watch it. I love this musical. I saw it on Broadway, and I saw the film version. It brings back many memories from that time in my life. I’m sure this musical will be a hit for FOX TV. I feel it’s a great choice. It will be interesting to see the cast members as they are announced.
5…Essence and Twitter announce a partnership to livestream a weekly show
Essence has teamed with Twitter to bring “Essence Now” to the live streaming part of the platform. The weekly show covers entertainment, fashion, love and relationships. “Essence Now” will be the first live show for black women on Twitter. Read more about the partnership on Target Market News >>> HERE.

This sounds like a cool collaboration. Twitter seems to be making moves with live streaming partnerships. It is clear that this will be a continued revenue stream for the platform. I think it’s a good look. It will draw people to the network and keep them there for an extended period of time. Nice move, Twitter. Will you be watching?

You covered it all. Not sure why Bow Wow was stunting for the gram, he should know that the internet is undefeated in these things…LOL.

You’re right. He should know. But, he got caught in major fashion. “Poor little Tink Think.”

I hadn’t heard about the Essence collaboration but it sounds dope! Since I’ve gotten into the blogger world, I realized how much I actually enjoyed Twitter when you follow the right people. I’ll definitely be tuning in.

Bow Wow played himself but nobody has been checking for him for years now.

RHOA was off the hook, I watched with my mouth all the way open. I never liked Phaedra and her lies were evident from the first episode she was on.

I can’t wait to watch Titus.

I love Rent, they better do it right.

Nice update! I watched the first season of Kimmy Schmidt and loved it but the 2nd season didn’t hold my attention for some reason. I’ll have to catch up and check out season 3. I’m so here for the Essence & twitter partnership!
