This weekend the entertainment and music industries are preparing for the Billboard Music Awards in Las Vegas. Who will win the top artist of the year? Elsewhere people are planning for Memorial Day and attending graduation ceremonies. This week’s pop culture update includes celebrity home invasions, Xscape reunites, Miss USA is crowned and more.

Pop Culture Update

1…XSCAPE reunited and set to perform at this year’s Essence Festival
R&B Group XSCAPE announced earlier this year that they were reuniting and planning a tour. In a recent sit-down with Essence, the group shared that they will perform at the 2017 ESSENCE Fest in New Orleans this July. Kandi Burruss, Tameka “Tiny” Cottle, LaTocha Scott and Tamika Scott are wiling with music legend Mona Scott-Young and her Monami Entertainment company for the epic performance.
When the announcement of the reunion hit the airwaves earlier this year, people went crazy. Lots of fans were excited and ready for a new album. I enjoyed the group XSCAPE when I was growing up. They have some great songs. However, when Kandi started appearing on the Real Housewives of Atlanta, my view on her changed. Then I watched the XSCAPE Unsung episode on TV One. That episode shed a bit of clarity on why the group broke up. I said all that to say…I wish XSCAPE the best with their reunion performance and tour. They have my support. Are you excited about this reunion? Will you be at ESSENCE Fest to see them perform?

2…Black-ish gets a spin-off
Entertainment Weekly
Yara Shahidi is getting her own spin-off! The Black-ish star’s character Zoey is going to college. The series on FreeForm cable network will follow the oldest sibling as she attends college. The show is expected to premiere in 2018. Entertainment Weekly provides more details in a recent article on the exciting news.

I’m a fan of Black-ish. Prior to the show’s debut, I worried about how it would be accepted and how the topics would be broached. I can proudly say that the show is amazing and awesome. It addresses issues that people of color face in the world today. I think this spin-off will be fantastic. This is great news for Yara Shahidi. She’s a positive role model and tremendous actress. I plan to watch the show. I hope the writers from Black-ish will be part of the new show. After careful thought, am I the only one having visions of “A Different World” when it spun off from the Cosby Show? We’ve seen this before. Will you watch the spin-off?

3…Aisha Tyler ordered to pay ex-husband $1.5 million in divorce settlement
ET Online
Aisha Tyler’s divorce from Jeff Tietjens has been finalized. As part of the agreement she will pay her ex-husband a sum $1.5 million in spousal support. Tyler and Tietjens, married for 20 years, separated in 2015. Tietjens filed for divorce in April 2016 siting irreconcilable differences as the reason the marriage failed. This article from Entertainment Tonight provides more details.

I  saw Aisha Tyler [in person] a few weeks ago at the Bentonville Film Festival. She was lovely and funny as ever. I enjoyed the Essence Fashion panel that featured her as the celebrity guest. First of all, I knew she was married; but not for 20 years! Wow. I understand spousal support. Her husband is a lawyer by trade. However, $31K per month for 48 months seems a bit excessive. But, then again, I don’t know the specifics of their union. I wish them the best.

4…Miss USA was crowned this past week
USA Today
Sunday night, the Miss USA Organization crowned Miss District of Columbia Kara McCollough as the 66th Miss USA. This marked the first time that Miss D.C. won back-to-back. McCollough is a nuclear scientist. The Top 5 included four women of color. USA Today provides a recap of the competition.

How awesome is this?! I missed the actual broadcast, but I heard the great news and saw the mentions on Twitter. This is real #BlackGirlMagic! Shout out to Washington DC for producing all the pageant winners.

5…Celebrity homes are being invaded
In recent weeks news stations reported several break-ins and robberies over the last few months. Burglars have hit the homes of Kendall Jenner, A$AP Rocky and more. TMZ has several reports of celebrity home robberies. See the latest robberies below.

  •  Amber Rose. An intruder broke into Amber Rose’s Los Angeles home, not to steal anything, but to chill for four hours. No one was reportedly hurt. {Huffington Post}
  • Dina Manzo. The former Real Housewives of New Jersey cast member and her boyfriend were recently beaten and bound in her home during an invasion. The two arrived home after an event to find two robbers already in the home. {Huffington Post}

So…I have mixed emotions on these invasions. Don’t get me wrong. It’s very unfortunate that these folks were robbed and endured dangerous situations. Where is the security? Are celebrities getting to comfortable? Are they sharing too much information on social media? People, including robbers, are watching them [the celebrities] and their every move. They know when you aren’t home. Celebrities are sometimes too quick to post on Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, etc. These apps can [and will] post locations. It’s all fun and games…until someone invades your privacy. I’m not saying the social media posts led to these invasions. That’s not what I’m saying, but it does make you think about how easy it is to over-share in your posts. Celebrities have GOT to be more careful.

      Catherine, that’s a great question. I can see her going between the two shows as college kids often visit home during the semester. This spin-off connection reminds me of “A Different World” when it spun off from The Cosby Show.
