Social Media Updates – January 3, 2017

This week’s social media updates include headlines from Twitter, Google, Disney and Snapchat. Which social media stories caught your eye?

Twitter users want the ability to edit tweets>>>

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey requested ideas on ways to improve the user experience on Twitter. He received a variety of requests including conversation management and better management of abuse on Twitter. However, the most popular request was for the ability to edit tweets. Read more about the Twitter Wish List >>> HERE.

I’ve said this before, Twitter is trying to stay relevant and afloat. I think it’s cool that the CEO crowdsourced the users to get feedback on what changes they want to see [happen]. I absolutely agree that the biggest modification needed is the ability to edit tweets. I’ve tweeted about several times. Even, Kim Kardashian, tweeted a request for an edit button in the past! My hope is that Jack Dorsey takes notice of the wish list and makes swift progress on implementing a few changes on the platform. What changes would you like to see on Twitter?

Golden Globes red carpet to be live streamed on Twitter>>>

Dick Clark Productions will produce a live streamed red carpet pre-show for the 74th annual Golden Globe Awards on Sunday, January 8. The pre-show will include celebrity interviews and questions from fans on Twitter. You can watch the live stream at goldenglobes.twitter.com or @goldenglobes or in Twitter Moments. Read more about the Golden Globe Live Stream >>> HERE.
“Twitter is critical to the live element of our shows by connecting audiences through real time conversation,” said Mike Mahan, president, dick clark productions.

Awards Season is one of my favorite times of the year. I can’t wait for the Golden Globes to air this weekend. It will be fun to see the red carpet live streamed. This seems to be a perfect combination – live streaming and Twitter conversations/mentions. The users are already talking about the Golden Globes, let’s see what impact watching a live stream will have on the conversation. I hope Twitter is ready for this innovation. Let’s be honest, they will use the Periscope platform to execute this technical effort. I will watch the pre-show on Twitter. Do you plan to tune in this Sunday?

Google Will Launch Podcasts for Agencies Through Partner Program>>>

The podcast will feature agencies and share insights on products, agency life and more. One focus will be how agencies flourish in the digital and creative worlds. Read more about the Google Podcast >>> HERE.

Podcasting is huge. It’s seen a resurgence lately. I love a good podcast. The fact that Google is starting an agency-focused podcast is clever. I’ve listened to podcasts from industry experts and niche professionals. However, I’ve don’t recall ever finding a podcast dedicated the agency perspective. I look forward to tuning in, as I now pay closer attention to the agency world. Will you listen to this podcast?

Disney Television will create shows for Snapchat>>>

Disney has partnered with Snapchat to reach a younger audience and viewers. This deal is the latest for Snapchat with media companies. The debut show begins this week with a series around ABC’s “The Bachelor” franchise. Read more about the Disney deal >>> HERE.

FYI, Snapchat is looking to go public (IPO) in the spring. This deal helps make that happen. It will be intriguing to see how this plays out on the platform. I’m sure Disney paid a hefty amount of money for this integration. They will certainly hit a younger audience on Snapchat and The Bachelor is a good series to kickoff the collaboration. I’m going to keep my eyes on this execution and see what become of it.

Snapchat Spectacles Will Affect Influencer Marketing>>>

Snapchat Spectacles were a hot item during the Holiday 2016 season. As influencer marketing continues to grow, brands and celebrities will incorporate marketing efforts using Spectacles. Read this article from AdWeek.com on the 5 ways Spectacles will affect influencer marketing >>> HERE.

Some brands and influencers are willing to try new things. Snapchat Spectacles is the new “toy” in the marketing game. I haven’t purchased Spectacles yet, but I’ve seen a few videos from those who have. It will be interesting to see how this new tool impacts influencer marketing. Snapchat will eventually need to show metrics on usage and views. At this point, it’s interesting to see content from a first-hand point of view. What do you think about Spectacles?

In Closing…

We are beginning to see a pattern with these social media updates. They are innovating and imitating to continue to reach current users and attract new users. This phenomenon will only become more apparent as we move through the new year. It will be interesting to see what new platforms are introduced this year and which networks fall by the wayside (Twitter, I’m looking at you).
I will continue to cover the social media updates and keep you informed.

I want an editing twitter feature that similar to Facebook’s, where there is a thread so that your old words are gone completely. I could see some people trying to back track so legally, I’d like a thread.

Social media is changing the game. Disney Channel no has a show, Bizaardvarks, that is about kids who are social media influencers. I was FLOORED when I thought about just how much social media is influencing traditional media and business. OK, I know that didn’t answer the question. LOL

You are exactly right, Anitra. Social media is definitely influencing traditional media and everyday life. It’s exciting and scary at times.

  3. Kim

Umm yeah, I am surprised twitter has not implemented an edit feature yet. It’s crazy, especially when you tweet for a sponsored campaign, and you’re told something has to change. The worst.

  4. LaQuisha

I am excited to see what new social media platforms will be introduced this year! I also agree with Kim 100%. I hate when I mispell a tweet and have to redo the entire thing, LOL! Great post!

Awesome, Carisa. The NFL is absolutely working with Twitter to stream games. That’s cool that you were able to watch on Twitter.

      Thanks for stopping by.

I know i hate that we cant edit on twitter. I have heard that people are not loving twitter as much because of how short lived the tweets are.

Yes, Twitter is struggling. The life of a tweet is quite short. Hopefully they will make improvements that help the network flourish.

Thanks for these update, I did not know anything about them. I’m not on Snapchat yet, but I may have to get on it for my daughters if Disney puts a show on it.

I try and I try to use twitter but I find it hard to really get into it. I like KKW’s suggestions on how they can prove though.
