I hope your year is ending with much success and determination! With the holidays in full swing, the Talk Thursday series continues. Today, the featured guest is Marian M. I met Marian a few years ago when I worked at an online marketing agency in Central Arkansas. She was an impressive applicant for the available temp position in my department. I hired her and the rest is history. She is very knowledgeable and currently pursuing her graduate degree. Marian has an awesome spirit and vibe. I’m sure you’ll enjoy her answers. 1. What is your favorite food dish, and why?
My favorite dish is my mother’s macaroni-n-cheese. Every time I visit home, I ask her to cook it, and I tell my friends about it all the time. There’s nothing particularly special about the ingredients, but what makes it so good is the love she puts into it.
2. If you had to eat one cuisine for the rest of your life, which cuisine would you choose?
This is so hard! I LOVE spicy food, so I eat lots of Thai, Chinese, Indian and Caribbean cuisine. I especially love jerk seasoning and the heat that comes from scotch bonnet peppers, so I would ultimately choose Jamaican food. I love meat patties, jerk chicken, rice and beans, fried plantains, curried chicken and ginger beer.
3. What is the best health and fitness advice you can share with the Addicted to Fries readers?
Walk everyday. I’m currently a graduate student at the University of Missouri, and I have to walk at least 3 to 4 miles a day just to get around campus. I also walk around our downtown area between classes to get some fresh air. With all these extreme workout videos around, I think people believe you have to do these strenuous exercises to get health benefits. Although I can’t say how much weight I’ve lost (I don’t weigh myself), but I can tell that my legs are more toned and my clothes fit much better.
As far as overall health, I have one piece of advice: be good to yourself. My mother always tells me this. Health goes past the food you eat or the exercises you do. Health encompasses how we treat ourselves emotionally, spiritually and mentally (banish negative thoughts!). It also includes removing toxic people and things from our lives so there’s space for beautiful things to bloom.
4. Currently, what is your favorite snack food?
I love to eat whole food bars! My favorite one right now is a coconut and Acai berry bar by RISE. I’ve always had a bit of a sweet tooth, but I’ve become more health conscious and concerned about taking good care of my body. So, I started searching for foods that could fulfill my sweet tooth while still being nutritious.
5. What type of beverage best describes your personality, and why?
Coconut water with a twist of lime. Coconut water is refreshing and sweet and the lime adds something a little unexpected. People always talk about my sweet voice and personality, but I also have a love of doing and trying things that are unexpected, such as shaving my hair or trying unique lipstick colors.
6. What was the last local (unique to your area) restaurant at which you dined, and what did you have to eat?
I went to Uprise Bakery, a restaurant located in Ragtag Cinema, a local independent theater. All the bread is baked fresh and the ingredients are locally grown. I always get a Banh Mi sandwich. The pulled pork is tender and juicy, and the pickled veggies along with the Kimchi slaw is divine.
