The Best Social Media News Updates To Read This Week

“It’s the week before Christmas and all through the ’net

social media was stirring, every platform was set.

New features were ready and announced with care,

In hopes that users would soon be there.”

That’s all I got…my attempt at holiday poetry for this week’s edition of social media news updates. The industry continues to advance. Top social media platforms are adding features (some exciting) with the intent of keeping our attention and time. In the meantime, people are shopping with more online buyers than ever before. Retailers are introducing convenient services and free shipping to attract shoppers. Several are increasing their presence and ad-spending on social media.

There’s lots of fun social media news updates this week. Let’s get into the headlines…

Social Media News Updates for This Week

This week's social media news updates include new features from Twitter and Facebook and a VR app from Google.

Twitter incorporates Periscope live video into its app >>>

Twitter has updated its app to include Periscope’s live-streaming capabilities. Users can now live stream from their Twitter accounts. Read more about the Twitter integration >>> HERE.

Twitter finally added this feature. Could the live streaming feature take the place of Vine? Lately I’ve been missing Vine. Those short videos were annoying. You don’t miss something until it’s gone. Essentially, this Twitter live stream is Periscope added to the Twitter app. I’ve seen mixed reviews on my timeline. Will Twitter Live Video replace Periscope? Meaning, will people use the Twitter app versus opening and broadcasting in the Periscope app. Does this signal the beginning of the end for Periscope? I think Periscope still has unique features that could keep it afloat for a longer time.

Google’s VR app gives viewers a glimpse of New York holiday displays >>>

Google’s “Window Wonderland” app lets users view the holiday displays of New York department stores. Participating stores include Barney’s, Bergdorf Goodman, Bloomingdale’s, Macy’s and Saks Fifth Avenue. Other retailers featured include Tiffany, Burberry, Cartier, Louis Vuitton and more.

Can I just say…this innovation is AWESOME! What a great idea. As a former NYC resident who loved viewing “the windows,” I’m excited about this app. I think it’s really cool that you can view the displays…from the middle of America (where I now live). Do you love the NYC Holiday displays? Have you viewed them in-person? Will you check out this cool app?
Google digitized the festive displays at 18 major retail establishments for your enjoyment—no trip to Manhattan required.

Starbucks and Pokemon Form a Partnership>>>

Starbucks and Pokemon have formed a partnership that brings that game to 7,800 U.S. Starbucks locations. The deal also includes a Pokemon Go Frappiccino blended beverage. Read more on the deal with Pokemon >>> HERE.

So, yea, I’m sitting in a Starbucks right now. I just opened by Pokemon app to see if I catch and Poke monsters. This location is a Pokestop. I collected a few items and viewed the sponsored deal for the Pokemon GO Frappuccino. Truth be told, I was an avid Pokemon player when the app first launched in July. Since that time, I’ve reduced my activity. Are you still playing Pokemon?

Facebook introduces Live Audio >>>

Facebook Live Audio allows users to tell stories with words and not video. You can read more about this new feature in a blog post from the Facebook Team >>> HERE.

This innovation was a shock to me. But, after reading the news release from Facebook, it makes sense. It will be interesting to see how users and brands incorporate live audio into their Facebook content. In my opinion, this essentially sets Facebook up as a podcast option. I love a good podcast. The more I think about it, the more excited I get. Don’t be alarmed if you see these updates posted as live audio on the Addicted to Fries blog page. Live audio gives people and brands another type of content to create. It can be especially helpful if you are timid of live video, yet want to leverage your Facebook Page in a different way. I’ll keep you posted on how this works out for me. I don’t have the option yet, but I’m anxiously waiting. Will you try live audio?

As we near the end of the year, social media platforms are continuing to update and innovate. Twitter is making moves to stay relevant, but could this integration mean the eventual end of Periscope? Google did a very cool thing by bringing the NYC holiday windows to…the world! Be sure to check out the Winter Wonderland app.
